BookCoverProject

Cover:Stardust

Cover:Coraline

Book cover project for my Illustration Media and techniques class I took last spring(2012). For this project we had to pick two books by the same author and create two covers that worked off of each other in water media(water color).

For my books I chose Neil Gaiman's 'Coraline' and 'Stardust.'
I feel like the Coraline cover is the weaker of the two I created. I kind of rushed it, but I learned that it's better to experiment with color studies then to just jump right in. This piece has been heavily edited digitally to get the colors right. I still feel like I could have done Coraline's cover better and I might revisit this piece in the future.
The Stardust cover earned me an honorable mention in the local Rebel show and will be featured in the Rebel's yearly publication alongside my 'FancyFoxTeaParty'   (which earned 2nd place in the Illustration competition).
My style is slowly evolving into something that I can be proud of, I still have a long way to go though(:

BirdsofWar

BirdsofWar
Painting for my water color class from last spring(2012). For this work we had to incorporate 7 birds into a composition using only water media.

All the Birds up here are native to North Carolina. Can you guess/name all of them?

Water colors on cotton paper(btw, DON'T ever use cotton paper with water color; after a few strokes the cotton fibers will begin to lift and tear!)

FancyFoxTeaParty

FancyFoxTeaParty

This was a zinc-plate etching I did for my intro to print making class last fall.

The original was black and white tonal, but the scan I had of it was poor, so I colored it in Photoshop. When I go back to school in the fall I'll re-scan it and post it so you can see more of the details. I originally wasn't going to post this because I wasn't really happy with it, but one of my friends insisted I post it. So here we are.

Days and days in the printing lab at ECU(etching is a long process)+3hours to color in pscs5

Tiger tattoo commission for http://jderby1.deviantart.com/
He commissioned me at the beginning of the semester, but I only got the chance to finish it about a week ago. I recently added the bg because, to me, it makes it look more complete.

FishatAppleBoy

FishatAppleBoy

Colored Pencil project # 2 for my Illustration survey class. For this piece we were given 3 words, and two of the 3 words had to demonstrate morphing. My words were: Fish, Garment, and Cage.

This is actually a portrait of my real-life fiancĂ©. This is literally what he does in his spear time. orsomthingkindoflikethat.

Done with Prismacolor Colored Pencils on illustration board.

Colored Pencil project # 1 for my Illustration survey class. For this project our teacher wanted us to utilize a limited color pallet and re-create a scene from either one photograph or multiple photos merged together by the artist imagination.

For this image I used 2 stock photos:
One from: http://caoimhe-stock.deviantart.com/art/caoimhe-stock-42-21394194
And the other from: http://stockcity.deviantart.com/#/dw2mxz

I drew the image I wanted form the 2 photos  by hand on illustration board and used watercolor washes, Prisma Colored Pencil and a verity of different colored pencil techniques our teacher showed us. As you can see I took a lot of artistic liberties with both these images. That’s ok; the teacher encouraged us to think in different colors that what the images held.

MiraculousConception

MiraculousConception

Umm…This image was inspired by Waffleguppies's portal fanfic “Blue Sky” (on Tumblr), though the image itself doesn’t really have anything to do with her fic. I really doubt the possibility of her Wheatley being able to impregnate Chell. I just wanted to do something that emphasized the way he sees her as such a higher being; almost God (Goddess?) like.  I also wanted to draw Chell as an Art-Nouveau-Mucha-like goddess figure.

Yep…There was more I wanted to do with this picture, but I really need to get started on my homework. It’s been, like, YEARS AND YEARS since I last did any kind of fanart. That’s how moved I was by her story. I really recommend reading it, even if you don’t know anything about the portal universe. It’s a good heartfelt story that I feel can stand on its own without prior knowledge of the video games.

Pscs, x amount of hours.
Portal stuff belongs to Valve. Artwork by me.
